Check out our Q&A with Brittany below to learn about her health journey, Malibu Mylk's roots, and tips for a balanced life.
Q: Tell us more about your health journey.
I was born in Ohio, where tv dinners and Lunchables were the norm. We moved to Malibu when I was 7 and I quickly noticed stark differences in the cafeteria at school. Classmates were bringing sandwiches with homemade bread and produce grown in their garden. It was a pretty big eye opener. Then, a couple of years ago when I went to see a functional medicine doctor. She ran a plethora of tests and recommended I start the auto-immune protocol, a very strict diet that eliminates dairy, nuts, gluten, soy and other top allergens from the diet. I went searching for an alternative mylk, free from these allergens and was disenchanted by the options that were available. That's when the idea struck me for organic flax mylk!
Q: What is your focus or philosophy when it comes to living a healthy, balanced life?
Brittany: I truly believe in everything in moderation. I've tried different regimens over the years and while I tend to feel best limiting gluten and dairy, I think it's important to allow yourself to enjoy whatever you are craving from time to time. I try to get a balance of fiber and protein in my diet every day.
Q: What do you see as the biggest challenges to making health more accessible for people today?
Brittany: Cost and availability. It's a shame that so much of the world does not have access to fresh produce and that the affordable food is generally unhealthy. Shipping and storing fresh food makes the pricing of these items cost prohibitive for many.
Q: If there was one thing you could change about our food system or culture around food, what would it be? Education! The nutrition classes we took at school were so out of touch. Even today it's confusing. For so long we were told that fat is the enemy when it turns out that fat is incredibly important. Clearing up the myths around food and promoting education from an early age.
Q: What's your advice to anyone starting down their own journey towards health?
Brittany: Baby steps! One foot in front of the other. Start small with goals you know you can achieve. Try to eliminate something for a week or two, whether it's gluten, dairy, refined foods, caffeine or alcohol. See how you feel. Watch the results and go from there.
