Brands Against Single-Use Plastics: An Open Letter to the Consumer Packaged Goods Industry

The Plastics Problem with Packaged Products

Packaging accounts for the largest volume of plastic consumption in the world, and is considered the greatest source of waste globally.

With over 100 million tonnes produced annually, more than 96% of plastic packaging goes unrecycled. For single-use plastics, packaging might be used and disposed of within a few minutes, only to accumulate in landfills or the natural environment, leaching chemicals, heavy metals and toxins.

If our packaging never biodegrades, can our products truly be sustainable?

The consumer packaged goods (CPG) industry can no longer kick the metaphorical plastic bottle or bag down the road. Today, thanks to innovations in plastic alternatives made from renewable, compostable materials, CPG brands have the power to choose sustainable packaging options. We believe we can and should package our food with responsible materials that come from and return to natural elements.

Will you join us in this new vision for a plastic-free future?

It's never been more essential for our industry to take a long-term view toward true sustainability and circularity for the health of our environment.

The signatories to this letter are calling on you to sign on and share your commitment to build circular design into the future of your product packaging. We call on you to join us in making this the year that consumer packaged goods brands took responsibility for the dirtiest aspect of our industry: our products’ wasteful end of life. We can change the course of our plastic pollution crisis, together.
